Why Do Some People Experience God in Their Lives, But I Never Have?

Maybe because you are seeking an ‘experience’ with God rather than a relationship with God. I experience things—-poverty, wealth, freedom, slavery, pleasure, pain, work, leasure, etc. God however is a person. One has a relationship with a person.

Every person, God included, sets the terms and conditions for a (positive) relationship with themselves. God is no different. Our relationship with Him can be that of an enemy or a friend. Human beings by virtue of our inherent fallen nature evolve into natural enemies of God our Creator. We like sheep all go astray. We do our own thing, go our own way. We flout His law. Rebellion and corruption are in all our ways. The love of God is not in us, but we love the world (system) ruled by the prince of this world (Ephesians 2.1-3). “If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”

Our natural posture toward God then is enmity. In that stance there can be no positive relationship, i.e. no fellowship or communion with the One who made us and sent His Son into the world to save us.

However, if we will believe what God says about our bankrupt condition (Romans 3.10-18), lose our self-righteousness, put away our pride, and just acknowledge that we are lost, broken, inherently sinful beings and receive Jesus Christ as our Savior, then God will welcome us into His fellowship as members of His royal family with all the rights, privileges and immunities belonging to that cosmic estate. (John 1.12)

For that point, the Holy Spirit makes us new creations in Christ (we are born again), persons inhabited and morally empowered and spiritually enabled by the Holy Spirit to walk with God, to exercise throne rights (pray), experience God’s forgiveness, experience God’s power, experience God’s provisions, and enjoy the fulness of God in the inner man.

So you see, there must first be a positive relationship with God before one can enjoy experiences of His presence, His power and provision.

That said, God, we must remember, is sovereign and should He decide, as He has done in the past, to expose the unbelieving to His demonstrations, He can do that, as we see in the case of Pharaoh and the Egyptians in the Exodus accounts. Those are experiences, however, orchestrated by God but what man fundamentally needs is a relationship with God, that is fellowship with God.
